Swift N80644

New Caretaker: Ken Rowe
Words and Photos courtesy of previous caretaker Bruce Ray
(Bruce is in search of a "Super Swift"!)

I bought this Swift in Justin, TX on Nov 9th 2001 and left for S. Korea 5 days later. The gentleman that I bought her from is Jesse Schrack. He is a retired American Airline pilot and turned 83 this year. You might have seen the article on his ranch in TX in the April issue of Pilot Journal. '644 resided in Savannah, GA for about 6 months till I got back on my mid tour from Korea. Then I brought her up to WV where Eddie Shields used to live and left her there until I got back in Nov of 2002.

In April I flew her down to Enterprise, AL where she had a brand new hangar to live in while I was teaching Flight School XXI for the Army. June 2nd I got a wild idea to do a stick conversion and instrument panel.

As you can see I integrated my GPSMAP 196 in the panel. When that GPS is out of date then a nice glove box can fill the void. I left room for another radio under the transponder and can even put a CDI where my clock is!!

After a lot of positions that Yoga instructors can fit into, busted knuckles, a little $$ and a lot of Sweat and tears I test flew her on the 5th of Oct and she flew awesome.

One of the findings that we fixed made an amazing difference on the ease of flying this airplane. When we reset the tension for the rudder pedals, we found the tension on the short cables between the steering arms for the tail wheel and the rudder to be zero... in fact they were sagging?!?! But they are set back to their right tension and I don't run out of right pedal on take off any more!!

Thank you goes out to everyone who helped me work and get her back up. Fred Latremore, Al Luzier, Wayne Reagan, Brent Starr and of course my Wife Jennifer! (She did the windows)

I am leaving the Army to go to fly for a corporate company in a Citation. It's in my hometown and my wife, Jennifer, can keep her business. I am so pleased with the way my Swift flys.

Cheers to everyone out there and tears for those who have never flown a Swift!!
