The following document was compiled and updated from Ernie Linn's initial SAM APPROVED DESIGN LISTING. The contributors to the original herculean project and publication effort were Ernie Linn, Jim Adams, George Armstead, John Pond, Bob Larsh, Dee Mathews, Jack Phelps and other dedicated SAM members. A special thanks to Don Bekins, Ernie Linn, and Jim Adams for their ideas, contributions, updates and assistance with this second endeavor. - Bob Larsh
This listing of model designs and kits is provided as a guide to identify models reviewed and approved by the Society of Antique Modelers as authorized designs for use in old timer contests both at the local level and the National SAM CHAMPS. As mentioned, much effort has been expended in creating this document and to make it as accurate and complete as possible. Even so, some information is missing & any help to fill the gaps is appreciated. Newly approved models will be announced in SAM SPEAKS and duly added to the I ist. It should be known that an ambitious project is underway to provide a SAM Design Approval Book complete with pictures, illustrations, and specifications. Assistance will be required in locating photos, line drawings, or 3 views of the more rare designs. Please send these to Wes Funk for inclusion in the next edition.
Kitted models are identified by the kit manufacturer
being shown in capital letters in the kit-mfg./designer column. Model designers
are shown in lower case. Published designs will reference the specific
magazines or books and dates. Approved models never kitted or published
will simply list the designer and date. The Antique category is for models
designed prior to 1939. The Old Timer class is for models designed in the
1939 to end of 1942 time frame. Scale gas designs are referenced in the
second part of this listing. As the year 2000 and beyond is fast approaching,
normal date referencing notation for publications such as 10/36 (October
1936) will become archaic and perhaps confusing to our future modelers.
However, for now, the current system is to be retained.
A dash (-) in the various columns indicates that
the information for that particular segment is not complete at this time.
Any help in resolving the missing data would be much appreciated. This
publication indicates the models in their original size only. Wingspans
are shown in inches & wing areas in square inches. These may be either
projected or planform as mag/kit info is not always consistent. As SAM
rules specify a minimum flying weight based on a wing loading for most
classes, it is suggested that the builder verify the area from the construction
plans or completed wing to accurately determine the necessary weight,
The official SAM classifications/type designations
used to identify the status of the designs in this list are abbreviated
as follows: A = Antique; OT = Old Timer; F = Fuselage; PY = Pylon: SC =
Scale.
It should be noted that a few models will fall
into a "grey area" in that their classification could be considered a pylon
or a fuselage design. These were assessed by the approval committee as
to their configuration and flight performance, and then classified accordingly.
All cabin designs with windows will continue to be grouped with the fuselage
models regardless of their potential.
FREE FLIGHT:
Free flight models, except for .02 Replica, may
Not be scaled and are to weigh 8 oz. per square ft. of projected wing area.
This requirement may be calculated by multiplying the area In square Inches
by a factor of .0555 (weight in oz. required for one square inch). Thus,
a model of 300 square inches would have to weigh 16.6 ounces (300 x .0555).
Models are to be processed with no fuel on board. Weight requirements for
.02 Replica models are waived. Antique pylon designs are Not eligible to
compete in the 30 Second Antique Free Flight event. They may, however,
be flown in the FF Old Timer Pylon class. These models are identified by
an asterisk (*) after the model's name in the listing. Pylon and fuselage
models will be flown in separate events at the SAM CHAMPS. Separate classes
also are encouraged to be held on the local level whenever possible.
RADIO ASSIST:
All SAM R/C models, except 1/2A Texaco, are to
weigh 10 ounces per square ft. of PLANFORM (flatspan) area. The multiplying
factor here would be .0694 X square in. 1/2A Texaco models must weigh a
minimum of 8 oz. per square ft. of Planform area (.0555 X square in.).
In addition, all R/C models powered by either glow or glow engines converted
to ignition operation must have a minimum of 225 sq. in. of wing area per
.10 cubic in. of engine displacement. R/C models, except for the Pure Antique
class, may be scaled up or down. No distinction is made between pylon and
fuselage models in regards to flying separate events.
Consult the SAM rule book for approved design
modifications, legal construction changes, motor classifications, model
classes, events, engine runs and flight rules.
Every effort has been made to make this list as
complete as possible, however we are not above making mistakes or omissions.
