He married Ellen Lydia Smith in New Brighton, PA, July 10, 1894. (Ellen Lydia Smith #113.) Ellen was born in Erie Co., PA June 6, 1869. She was the daughter of Alexander Fountain Smith and Hannah Rebecca Backus. Ellen died May 27, 1940 in Cleveland, OH, at 70 years of age.

Joseph Woods Hays and Ellen Lydia Smith had the following children:
