9. Alexander Fountain⁴ Smith (Ephraim³, Alexander², Jonas¹) #64 was born in Butler Co., PA July 15, 1839. Alexander died July 20, 1901 in New Brighton, PA, at 62 years of age.

He married Hannah Rebecca Backus May 24, 1866. (Hannah Rebecca Backus #65.) Hannah was born in Erie Co., PA September 5, 1843. She was the daughter of John Backus and Lydia Chambers. Hannah died March 7, 1927 in New Brighton, PA, at 83 years of age.

Alexander Fountain Smith and Hannah Rebecca Backus had the following children:

+ 12 i. Perry Alexander⁵ Smith was born February 24, 1867.

13 ii. Ellen Lydia Smith #113 was born in Erie Co., PA June 6, 1869. Ellen died May 27, 1940 in Cleveland, OH, at 70 years of age. She married Joseph Woods Hays in New Brighton, PA, July 10, 1894. (Joseph Woods Hays #114.) Joseph was born in Whitestown, PA March 26, 1865. He was the son of Samuel W. Hays and Sarah Ann Cooper. Joseph died July 6, 1931 in Cleveland, OH, at 66 years of age. 14 iii. Myra Ann Smith #115 was born in New Brighton, PA May 27, 1871. Myra died September 1964.

+ 15 iv. Edward Smith was born August 21, 1873.

16 v. Mary Celia Smith #116 was born in New Brighton, PA November 4, 1878. Mary died September 1964.

17 vi. Lee Backus Smith #117 was born in New Brighton, PA September 2, 1880. Lee died June 7, 1944 in Garfield Heights, OH, at 63 years of age. He married Maude Florence Steele in New Brighton, PA, September 6, 1916. (Maude Florence Steele #118.) Maude was born in England 1877. She was the daughter of Alfred Steel and Fanny Barlow. Maude died May 3, 1960 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

18 vii. Bessie Edith Smith #119 was born in New Brighton, PA June 11, 1883. Bessie died October 9, 1894 at 11 years of age.
