"Vineyard owners Mike Beatty and Joyce and Jerre Sears teamed up to form Howell Mountain Vineyards in 1988. Beatty owns the 40-acre Beatty Ranch and sells most of his Cabernet and Zinfandel to Dunn and Cornerstone. Beatty's neighbors, the Searses, own the 25-acre Black Sears vineyard and sell grapes to a number of wineries including Turley Wine Cellars. Since 1994, with Ted Lemon of Littorai making the wines, they have produced some very good wines including the 1995 Howell Mountain Zinfandel (89, $16, 900 cases). A Beatty Ranch Cabernet and vineyard-designated Zinfandels from each of the two vineyards are coming soon. Production is 1,200 to 1,500 cases."

A ripe, high-octane style, with juicy plum and wild berry flavors, turning slightly hot on the finish where a peppery note comes through. Grapes come from Black Sears Vineyard.
