Amazing Spider-Man #192
"24 Hours To Doomsday". The title says it all! From the first
page we're exposed to Spider-man shackled to
J. Jonah Jameson. Connecting these two long time adversaries is a bomb set
to detonate within twenty-four
hours. Standing over them is non other than Spencer Smythe, the creator
of the Spider Slayers that have
plagued spidey over the years.
Spencer Smythe informs Spider-Man and Jameson that he is dying and really
has nothing else to lose, his
goal before he dies is to see both Spider-Man and Jameson die. Smythe further
explains that the Plutonium
that he had been using over the years to develop the Spider Slayers has
been poisoning him. Of course
Jameson tries to buy off Smythe again, offering to pay for all of Smythe's
medical expenses, it is however,
too late.
Spider-Man takes off through the city hauling Jameson with him. In typical
Spider-Man tradition,
Spider-Man is out of web fluid and cannot return to his apartment for a
refill because Jameson would then
discover his secret identity. So no web slinging, Spidey is stuck resorting
to leaping and bounding over the
city carrying the 180-pound Jameson with him.
Spidey then goes to visit Dr. Curt Conners a.k.a. "The Lizard."
Here he asks for the assistance in trying to
break the code of the bomb. The police however where notified and break
into the lab forcing the duo out
again. While in the city again they encounter the Fly. The Fly is another
creation that Jameson had funded
in order to destroy Spider-Man.
The encounter with the fly leads Spider-Man and Jameson to be thrown from
a roof top into an alley.
Spider-Man manages to slow the fall but is knocked unconscious. The suspense
is in the moment if
Jameson actually lifts the web crawler's mask or not.
Switch to another missed event in Peter Parkers life, his graduation moment.
A group of his friends has
gathered in order to celebrate his "official"college graduation
and surprise Peter Parker when he shows up
to get his diploma. Unfortunately due to his current situation the diploma
will have to be mailed out. One
Mary Jane Watson is stood up on a date with Peter and takes off with Cliff.
Spider-Man wakes up to find that Jameson had carried him back to Dr. Conner's
lab. Doc Conners can offer
no solution to the bomb shackle and Spider-Man decides to return to Smythe's
lab for some answers. Upon
their arrival they discover that Smythe is dead and has left a pre- recorded
video message stating how
happy he is in death knowing that they both will die!
At this point Jameson cracks and begins to break down admitting that Spider-Man's
very existence has
served to humiliate him and make him less than the great man he could have
been. The science major
comes through again as he realizes that he can "freeze" the main
computer that controls the shackles with a
cryogenic chamber that was in the lab. Tension mounts as with seconds to
go the bomb pops off and
Spider-Man hurls it out the window, where it explodes in the sky.
All breath a sigh of relief as they realize just how close to death they
had come. Jameson then immediately
turns the events around and blames Spider-Man for the whole incident. The
accusations fly as Jameson
pronounces that Spider-Man had wanted to see him grovel and how bad he (Spider-Man)
really is. Spidey
blows him off and just leaves. As Jameson is left alone with his own feelings
that in truth Spider-Man had
come through where he failed. His biggest fear was that anyone would learn
to know that J.J.J. was just a
weak and ordinary man.
