Amazing Spider-Man #96-#98
Peter Parker returns home from a trip to London where he was unsuccessful
in finding his girlfriend,
Gwen Stacy, who moved there to live with relatives following her father's
death. While web-swinging in
New York City, Spider-Man rescues a young man who, due to a bad drug trip,
jumps off a rooftop.
Peter joins his friends as they go to an off-Broadway production featuring
Mary Jane Watson, who is the
love interest of Peter's roommate, Harry Osborn. Harry's father, Norman,
goes along with the group and
pays their way. Norman Osborn was the villain known as the Green Goblin,
who was able to discover
Spider-Man's secret identity. Due to amnesia, Norman is unaware that he
was the Goblin, and does not
remember Spider-Man's secret.
It turns out that Norman had at one time owned the theater where Mary Jane
was performing. During
intermission, both Peter and Norman pass by the same padlocked door in the
theater. The door causes
Peter's spider-sense to go off, and Norman starts to act strangely at the
site of the door. After the show,
Norman's memory of his Green Goblin days return. Later that night, Norman
returns to the locked door at
the theater. The room inside is one of his Goblin hideouts, providing him
his costume and weapons.
Spider-Man, knowing that Norman was acting strangely after the intermission,
has been following Osborn.
Spider-Man,s worst fears become reality as he reaches the door, facing the
Green Goblin, who remembers
that Spider-Man is Peter Parker.
Following a long fight across New York rooftops, the Goblin flies off, thinking
that Spider-Man has been
killed by a fall. Parker returns to his apartment, finding that Harry is
upset, thinking that Mary Jane is
starting to fall for Peter. Harry grabs some sleeping pills and passes out
quickly. Peter is concerned that Harry
has been relying on pills too much recently. Harry buys illegal drugs from
a pusher for the first time the
next day, following another incident of Mary Jane flirting with Peter. Later
the same day, Harry goes over
the edge when Mary Jane tells him that she is not his, or anyone else's,
girlfriend. Peter finds Harry at their
apartment, unconscious, suffering from a bad trip from the illegal pills.
At the same moment, the Green Goblin crashes through the window, wanting
to destroy Parker. The sight
of his son in such a bad state unnerves him, and he flies off. Peter gets
Harry medical help, then happens to
run into the pusher who is looking for Harry. Parker throws the pusher and
his helpers around, warning
them to get out of the drug business or suffer worse beatings.
Spider-Man searches for the Green Goblin and finds him flying on his glider
above the rooftops of the city.
During their battle, the Goblin uses a new weapon on Spider-Man, a bomb
that contains a mist that soaks
through Spider-Man's costume. The mist cancels out Spider-Man's ability
to stick to surfaces. Eventually,
Spider-Man outwits the Goblin, jumping on the Goblin's back and applying
a leg-lock around his neck.
Since the Goblin is on his glider at the time, Spider-Man forces him to
fly to the window of Harry's hospital
room. The Goblin faints from the shock of seeing his son so ill, and reverts
back to a normal state of mind,
forgetting everything connected to Spider-Man and the Green Goblin. Spider-Man
takes Norman home
after destroying the Goblin costume.
Gwen Stacy returns from London, completing the rare happy ending for Spider-Man.
