Spider-Man vs. Wolverine #1

Our story begins with Spider-Man failing to prevent a series of murders. Peter becomes very depressed and
decides to quit being Spider-Man. He decides to take a vacation. Just as he is about to leave, J. Jonah Jameson
calls him with an assignment. It turns out all the murder victims were KGB agents and the killer is a rogue
agent named Charlemagne. Ned Leeds has pulled in heavy favors to get this information and he and Peter
go to West Berlin in pursuit of the story.

Peter's mood doesn't improve in Berlin, particularly when Wolverine shows up at his hotel room
knowing Peter is Spider-Man. Wolverine tells Peter that he is involved in something much worse than he
realizes. He tells Peter to leave Germany. Peter doesn't want to be there anyway. When he goes to tell Ned
that he is returning home, he finds Ned has been murdered.

Peter is in a daze as he prepares to leave Berlin. He can't help but think that if he had been in his room,
Ned Leeds would not have died. He can't help but remember his Uncle Ben's words: With great power
comes great responsibility.

Spider-Man follows Wolverine into East Berlin. He finds Wolverine with Charlemagne: a woman
Wolverine calls "Charley". Charley disappears in a gun fight and Spider-Man and Wolverine scour Berlin
looking for her. When Spider-Man finds Wolverine at a cemetery about to kill Charley, he loses it. Not
knowing Charley wants to die, he fights Wolverine. The battle is furious. When Charley sneaks up on
Spider-Man, he wheels and hits her in the head. He had thought she was Wolverine and the force of his
blow is fatal. Peter is horrified. It was as Charley had planned, but for the whole trip back to New York, Peter
keeps replaying it in his mind.

The story continues into Amazing #289 which deals with the aftermath of Ned Leed's death.
