7 card stud:The standard game: 2 hole cards to each player and 1 up card, a betting period. This is followed by 3 more up cards, with a betting period in between. Then the 7th card (or the river) is another down card, followed by the last betting period. In this game we usually play with no ante, the first lowest card makes a forced bet of 25¢ to start the action. After that the highest hand showing begins the betting. Variations: High/Low splitHighest poker hand splits the pot with the lowest hand. A,2,3,4,5 is the best low (a pretty fair high hand too). High/Low split with 8 or better qualifier for the lowSame, but no card can be higher than an 8 to qualify for the low (8,7,6,5,4 is the minimum to qualify in this game for a low). High ChicagoHighest hand splits the pot with the player who has the highest spade in the hole. The Ace being the highest card of the suit. |
Texas Hold'emStandard game: 2 hole cards to each player, a betting period. Then 3 cards are delt on the table (the board) this is called the flop. A betting period. 1 single card is delt on the board, this card is known as the turn. A betting period. Then the last card, the end or the river is delt on the board. There is the final bet. These 5 community cards across the board may be used by all players, along with their 2 hole cards, to make their best poker hand. Variation:Criss Cross.Basically a double board Hold'em game. Each player is delt two hole cards as in Hold'em. There is a betting period. The first flop consists of 4 cards delt at the 12 o'clock, 3 o'clock, 6 o'clock, and 9 o'clock positions on the board, as seen from the dealer's seat. A betting period. The turn is another 4 cards delt the same way --- 12 o'clock just under the first card; 3 o'clock just inside of the first card; 6 o'clock just above the first card; and 9 o'clock just inside the first card. The third betting period takes place. The River is one card delt in the center of the cross. A player may use either board to fill his hand, but not both. --- e.g.. up and down, or left to right. He may not mix cards from the two boards. |
Omaha High/Low (8 or better)The standard game: 4 hole cards to each player, and 5 community cards on the board. The player must use 2 hole cards, and 3 board cards exactly to make his hand. However it may be a one set of 2 & 3 for the high hand, and a different set of 2 & 3 for the low. And the low must be 8 or less to qualify. E.g. if there isn't at least 3 cards 8 or under on the board, nobody will have a low. |
Solano Slop --- our signature gameA fairly simple gambling game, but position and knowing your opponent's style is very critical. Procedure: Every player antes a preset amount into the pot. The dealer then deals 4 cards, face down, to each player. If the game is starting new he will also deal 5 cards, face down, in the middle of the table. This 5 card hand is the widow hand. The widow may be delt at any time, i.e. 5 off the top, or one at a time, or 5 at the end. It does not matter. The player to the dealer's left acts first, there is no further betting. He must decide only if he wishes to continue playing or not. He may take a fifth card to complete his hand and continue to play for the pot, or he may fold and sit out the remainder of this hand. The option to play then goes to the next player in rotation, he may take a card or fold. This goes around the table ending with the dealer (the best position). All players who have committed to play now show their cards. The best 5 card poker hand takes the pot. The losers, all of them, now match the amount that was in pot. So, if the hand finished with only 2 players in the showdown, the pot amount remains the same for the next hand -- one player took the pot, the loser matched the amount. However, with 3 players the pot amount doubles for the next hand -- one winner taking the money, and two players now matching the amount. With 4 players the pot triples, and so forth. If only one player takes a card, and all others fold, the lone player must play against the widow hand. This way he cannot steal the pot without risk. If he beats the widow he wins the pot. If he loses to the widow he must match the amount. If there has been a show down among 2 or more players, the widow hand remains face down on the table for the next hand. The game continues with the next player to the left now dealing. If there has been play against the widow a new widow will be delt for the next hand. It is widely agreed upon by the more veteran members of the club, that we haven't had a good Slop game since the Regan administration. This game just is not the same without Randy and Toad. |
