Perinatal Care for the Foal
1.) Dip the navel in dilute (0.5%) chlorhexadine solution soon after birth and every 6 hours
for the first 24 hours of life. This helps prevent infection from entering the open
umbilical stump before it closes down.
2.) Schedule an exam for mare and foal at 8-12 hours post foaling to screen for signs of neonatal problems
in the foal and to check the mare's reproductive tract.
3.) Keep the foal's environment clean and dry. 90% of all early infections enter via the navel or mouth.
4.) Call the Veterinarian immediately for advice or assistance if you have concerns of any kind and especially
if the foal does not fall within the normal parameters.
